Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 14   TSC 335 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Initial Count at Setup

Captions available

The idea

The initial count, done before the procedure begins, establishes what is on the field.

In practice

The scrub person and circulating nurse count sponges, sharps, small items and instruments aloud together, checking instruments against the tray list, and the circulator records the result.

Where people slip

An initial count done carelessly makes every later count unreliable.
