Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 14 TSC 332 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Arranging the Back Table
The idea
A well-arranged back table keeps everything organized, visible and within reach, so items are found quickly and counted reliably.
In practice
Apply the principles the sources share. First, arrange items so they are within easy reach and in clear view, and keep the surface clean and organized. Second, keep counted items where they can be seen and counted, such as sponges kept in their counted multiples. Third, keep suture needles contained, in a needle counter or their package or on a needle holder, never loose on the table. Fourth, give sharps a defined place, consistent with the team's neutral zone. Fifth, place heavy instruments so they cannot crush delicate ones. Sixth, label every medication and solution container. Many scrub persons arrange the table in the order items will be used; facility and surgeon preferences shape the details.
Where people slip
The test of a setup is whether someone else could step in and find everything. A table that only its builder can read is a risk at every relief and every count.
