The idea
Sponges for use inside the wound are X-ray detectable, separated one by one, and counted before use.
In practice
They are counted in their standard multiples, and a package containing the wrong number is removed from the field and isolated.
Where people slip
Sponges are never cut, and their marker tapes are never removed.
