Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 14 TSC 340 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Labeling the Field
The idea
Everything on the sterile field that holds a medication, solution or specimen is labelled.
In practice
Work through the field in order. First, every medication container and syringe is labelled with the drug name and strength when the drug arrives. Second, every solution container is labelled, including saline and water, because they look like other clear fluids. Third, specimen containers are labelled before specimens are passed off the field, and the labels are read aloud at the end of the case. Fourth, labels are placed where they can be read as the item is used. Fifth, nothing unlabelled is used; an unlabelled container is discarded.
Where people slip
Labels protect against the moment when attention is elsewhere. During a long case, the person who filled a syringe may not be the person who passes it.
