The idea
Poorly maintained equipment can burn or shock staff and patients, so equipment is inspected before it is used.
In practice
Inspect cords and do not use any that are frayed or damaged; electrical equipment near water must be properly grounded; follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Where people slip
If something does not look right, do not use the machine; take it out of service and call for help.
