Anaphylaxis in the OR

Captions available

The idea

Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction, and in surgery it can be triggered by drugs, latex, antibiotics or blood products.

In practice

Signs can include spreading hives, a rising heart rate, swelling and breathing changes; the anesthesia provider leads treatment.

Where people slip

Under drapes, a skin reaction may first be seen by the scrub person, so new redness or hives are reported at once.
