Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 5 TSC 115 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Allergies Before Anything
Captions available
The idea
A patient's allergies are confirmed before any medication or product is used, and they are stated aloud at the time out.
In practice
Common surgical triggers include some anesthetic drugs, latex, antibiotics, iodine-containing products and blood products.
Where people slip
An allergy that was missed preoperatively can surface mid-case, so new signs are reported, not explained away.
