Contrast Agents and Allergic Reactions

Captions available

The idea

Contrast agents are given to make structures show on imaging, and some contain iodine, which can cause allergic reactions.

In practice

Follow how a reaction is recognized and handled. First, the risk is identified beforehand: allergies are asked about and recorded, including reactions to iodine-containing products. The textbook notes that a shellfish allergy is now thought to relate to fish protein rather than iodine, so the history matters more than assumptions. Second, during or after the contrast is given, signs of a reaction are watched for, such as itching, a burning sensation, hives or swelling. Third, if a reaction occurs, the injection stops and the anesthesia provider or physician is alerted at once. Fourth, the reaction is documented and the patient's allergy record updated.

Where people slip

The scrub person may be the first to see hives spreading on a patient's skin under the drapes. Saying so immediately is part of the job.
