The idea
When bleeding is heavy, patients may need intravenous fluids or blood products, given by the anesthesia provider.
In practice
Before a transfusion, the anesthesia provider and the circulating nurse perform a mandatory two-person check of the blood product against the patient.
Where people slip
Some patients decline blood products for religious reasons, a choice the team knows before the case begins.
