The idea
Every item must be cleaned with water and a detergent or enzymatic cleaner before it is disinfected or sterilized.
In practice
Cleaning removes organic residue and salts that would otherwise shield microbes from the sterilizing agent.
Where people slip
An item that has not been cleaned cannot be reliably sterilized, however good the sterilizer.
