Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 6 TSC 144 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Packaging for Sterilization
The idea
Sterilization packaging must let the sterilant in, then keep microbes out until the item is opened at the point of use.
In practice
Follow how a set is packaged. First, items are cleaned, dried and inspected. Second, they are placed in a tray: hinged instruments open, removable parts taken apart, concave items placed to drain, heavy items placed so they do not damage delicate ones. Third, the set is enclosed in one of several systems: a rigid container, a peel pouch, or sterilization wrap. Fourth, wrap is applied without tenting or gaps, often as two sheets, either one after the other or both at once. Fifth, the packaging must suit the method: some materials are unacceptable for ethylene oxide, and linens and paper are unacceptable for hydrogen peroxide gas plasma.
Where people slip
A good package does four jobs: it lets the sterilant through, it protects the item during handling, it keeps microbes out, and it keeps the item sterile until use. A torn or wet package fails all of them.
