The idea
Sterile instrument sets come either wrapped in sterilization wrap or inside rigid reusable containers.
In practice
Wrap is folded so there are no gaps or tenting, often in two layers; containers are designed and validated by their manufacturers for particular cycles.
Where people slip
Either system protects only while intact; a gap in wrap or a damaged container seal ends sterility.
