The idea
Commercially sterile items arrive sterile from the manufacturer, and many carry an expiration date.
In practice
Packages are checked for damage, moisture and the date before use; expired items are not opened.
Where people slip
A manufacturer's date applies only while the package is intact; damage ends sterility before any date does.
