The idea
A sterile item is not used if its package is wet, torn, punctured, or past an expiration date it carries.
In practice
Before opening, check for moisture stains, holes, tears, broken seals and an indicator of the wrong color.
Where people slip
If the condition of a package is in doubt, it is treated as contaminated.
