Why We Count

Captions available

The idea

Surgical counts exist to make sure no sponge, sharp, small item or instrument is unintentionally left inside a patient.

In practice

The scrub person and circulating nurse count together, and the surgeon examines the wound before closing; each check covers the others.

Where people slip

A retained surgical item is treated as an event that should never happen, which is why counting is never skipped for convenience.
