The idea
Sponges are packaged in standard multiples and counted in those multiples, and a package with the wrong number is not used.
In practice
A package holding nine or eleven is removed, marked, and isolated from the other sponges, as facility policy directs.
Where people slip
Attached tapes are never cut from sponges, and soiled sponges are bagged in counted multiples so they stay visible.
