Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 10 TSC 230 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Radiopaque Sponges
Captions available
The idea
Sponges used inside a wound contain a marker that shows on X-ray, so a missing sponge can be found by imaging.
In practice
Only X-ray detectable sponges are placed in body cavities; plain gauze dressings without markers are added to the field only at skin closure.
Where people slip
Never cut a sponge or remove its marker, because the marker is what makes it findable.
