The Scrub Person's Work
The idea
The scrub person, a surgical technologist or a scrub nurse, works inside the sterile field beside the surgeon.
In practice
Walk through the role in order. Before the case, the scrub person helps the circulating nurse set up the room, then scrubs, gowns and gloves, and arranges the sterile instruments and supplies. During the case, the scrub person anticipates the surgeon's next move, passes instruments and supplies, and keeps the sterile field intact. Medications and solutions on the field are labelled by the scrub person, who also manages specimens while they are on the field and counts instruments, sponges and sharps with the circulating nurse, so that nothing is left inside the patient.
Where people slip
Every one of these tasks is shared work. The scrub person acts inside the field, the circulating nurse acts outside it, and neither can keep the patient safe alone.
