The idea
A perioperative first assistant helps the surgeon directly by retracting and handling tissue, controlling bleeding and helping close.
In practice
It may be a certified surgical first assistant, a registered nurse first assistant, a physician assistant or a nurse practitioner.
Where people slip
A registered nurse first assistant works at the surgeon's direction and does not act as the scrub nurse at the same time.
