The idea
The anesthesia provider, an anesthesiologist or a certified registered nurse anesthetist, keeps the patient safe, comfortable and breathing.
In practice
They assess the patient beforehand, give the anesthetic, manage the airway, and watch heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels throughout.
Where people slip
Under general anesthesia, breathing is supported by mechanical ventilation, and the provider adjusts the anesthetic to keep the patient stable.
