The idea
The surgical team divides into sterile members, who are scrubbed, gowned and gloved, and unsterile members, who are not.
In practice
The surgeon, the first assistant and the scrub person work in the sterile field; the circulating nurse and the anesthesia provider work outside it.
Where people slip
Sterile members touch only sterile items, and unsterile members touch only unsterile ones.
