The idea
The circulating nurse is a registered nurse who stays unscrubbed and manages the whole room.
In practice
The circulator prepares the room, opens supplies, watches the field, manages the time out and the counts, documents the case, and is the patient's primary advocate.
Where people slip
The circulator can move freely and the scrub person cannot, so the two depend on each other all case long.
