Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 10   TSC 239 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Labeling Specimens

Captions available

The idea

Specimens removed during surgery are managed on the field by the scrub person and labelled before they leave the room.

In practice

At the end of the case, specimen labels are read aloud, including the patient's name, as part of the surgical safety checklist.

Where people slip

A mislabelled specimen can lead to a wrong diagnosis for the patient, so labels are checked every time.
