The idea
Patients lose heat quickly in surgery, so warming equipment is used to prevent hypothermia.
In practice
Methods include warm blankets and drapes, forced-air warming devices, water-circulating devices, radiant warmers, and warmed fluids, gases and irrigation.
Where people slip
Warming devices are used exactly as directed, because misused equipment can burn a sedated patient who cannot feel it.
