Hypothermia Prevention
Captions available
The idea
Hypothermia, a core temperature below about thirty-six degrees Celsius, can harm surgical patients and slow healing.
In practice
Causes include a cold room, open body cavities, anesthesia and cool fluids; prevention uses insulation and active warming, with warmed fluids and irrigation.
Where people slip
Hypothermia can disturb heart rhythm and raise infection risk, so warming starts early.
