Guardians, Interpreters and Communication Needs

Captions available

The idea

Some patients need a guardian, an interpreter or other support so that they can understand and take part in their care.

In practice

Learn the main situations in order. First, patients who are cognitively or developmentally impaired need a guardian present for education, and a legal guardian may give consent. Second, patients whose preferred language differs from the team's need a professional interpreter; the textbook warns never to assume a patient's language from appearance or name, and to ask which language they prefer. Third, patients with sensory or cognitive deficits may need communication adjusted, such as simpler instructions and more time. Fourth, family members and caregivers are often important partners in supporting the patient through surgery.

Where people slip

Understanding is part of safety. A patient who did not understand the plan may not report a symptom, a risk or a misunderstanding about the surgery, so communication needs are met before the patient enters the room.
