The Digestive Tract Overview
The idea
The digestive system has two groups of organs: the alimentary canal, a continuous tube from mouth to anus, and the accessory organs that help it work.
In practice
Trace the canal in order from top to bottom. First, the mouth, then the pharynx, then the esophagus, which carries food to the stomach. Second, the stomach, which churns and mixes. Third, the small intestine, where most digestion and absorption happen. Fourth, the large intestine, ending at the anus. Now add the accessory organs: the teeth, tongue and salivary glands in the mouth, and the liver, gallbladder and pancreas, which deliver their secretions into the small intestine. Finally, the wall of the canal has the same four layers almost everywhere, from the inside out: mucosa, submucosa, muscularis and serosa.
Where people slip
Those four layers matter at the field. When the surgeon opens or sews bowel, each layer behaves differently, and the instruments and suture chosen reflect that.
