The idea
The appendix, also called the vermiform appendix, is a winding tube attached to the cecum, the first part of the large intestine.
In practice
The cecum is where the ileum meets the large intestine, through the ileocecal valve.
Where people slip
Because the appendix opens into the bowel, removing it means handling bowel contents, a consideration taught with wound classes in unit twenty-four.
