The Small and Large Intestines

Captions available

The idea

The small intestine has three parts, the duodenum, jejunum and ileum, and the large intestine runs from the cecum to the anus.

In practice

Follow the path. First, the duodenum, the shortest part, begins at the pyloric sphincter, curves behind the peritoneum, and wraps around the head of the pancreas. Second, the jejunum follows. Third, the ileum, the longest part, joins the large intestine at the ileocecal valve, a sphincter. Fourth, the large intestine begins at the cecum, with the appendix attached, then continues as the colon, ascending, transverse, descending and sigmoid, before the rectum and the anal canal.

Where people slip

Knowing which part of the bowel is involved tells the team about the case. Opening the bowel brings its contents, and their bacteria, into the field, which changes how the field is managed, as unit twenty-four explains.
