The Peritoneum
Captions available
The idea
The peritoneum is the serous membrane of the abdominal cavity, with a parietal layer on the wall and a visceral layer on the organs.
In practice
Folds of visceral peritoneum hold organs to the body wall and carry their vessels; the greater omentum drapes like an apron over the bowel.
Where people slip
Organs behind the peritoneum, such as the kidneys, are called retroperitoneal.
