Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 4   TSC 089 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Brain and Its Coverings

Captions available

The idea

The brain is covered by three connective tissue membranes, the meninges: the dura mater, the arachnoid and the pia mater.

In practice

The dura mater is the tough outer layer against the skull; the pia mater lies on the brain; the arachnoid lies between.

Where people slip

The dura mater also encloses the spinal cord, so the same layers are met in spine surgery.
