Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 4 TSC 091 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Parts of a Long Bone
The idea
A long bone has a shaft, called the diaphysis, and a wider end at each side, called the epiphysis.
In practice
Take the bone apart from the inside out. First, the diaphysis is a tube, and its hollow center is the medullary cavity, lined by a thin membrane called the endosteum. Second, each epiphysis is filled with spongy bone, whose spaces hold red marrow. Third, where the epiphysis meets the shaft is the metaphysis, which in growing bones contains the growth plate. Fourth, the outer surface of the bone is covered by a fibrous membrane, the periosteum.
Where people slip
Orthopedic procedures work on these parts, and the language of a case, such as a fracture of the shaft or a repair near the end of the bone, maps directly onto them. Learning the parts now makes an orthopedic preference card readable later.
