Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 4   TSC 093 short lesson, about 20 seconds

The Diaphragm Between Two Cavities

Captions available

The idea

The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle at the base of the lungs that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominopelvic cavity.

In practice

It forms the floor of the thoracic cavity; the aorta passes through it on its way from the chest into the abdomen.

Where people slip

Because it borders both cavities, work in the upper abdomen happens close to the chest, and the reverse.
