Receiving a Drug Onto the Field

Captions available

The idea

A medication reaches the sterile field from the circulating nurse, and the transfer is a checkpoint, not a hand-off.

In practice

Follow a typical transfer. First, the circulating nurse shows the container, and both the circulator and the scrub person read the medication name, strength and expiration date aloud. Second, the scrub person holds a sterile receiving container, already labelled for that medication, or labels it immediately. Third, the circulator transfers the medication without touching the sterile field, following the same rules as pouring any sterile solution: from the side, without splashing, from a container that is sealed and unexpired. Fourth, the scrub person keeps the original container information available until the case ends, in case questions arise. Facility policy sets the exact steps and the transfer devices used.

Where people slip

An unlabelled cup of clear fluid on a back table is a hazard, because several medications and solutions look identical. The label goes on at the moment of transfer, never later.
