The idea
Local anesthetics block nerve signals in one area, so a procedure can be done without pain in that region.
In practice
The anesthesia provider uses them for spinal, epidural and nerve blocks, and surgeons inject them at the operative site; some act briefly, others longer.
Where people slip
They come in more than one strength, so each syringe's label shows exactly what it holds.
