Anticoagulants and Bleeding
Captions available
The idea
Anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs, often called blood thinners, reduce the blood's ability to clot.
In practice
Patients taking them for heart or vessel conditions may be told to stop them before surgery, because continuing them raises the risk of bleeding.
Where people slip
Whether and when to stop is the surgeon's and prescriber's decision; the team's part is to report what the patient says.
