Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 3   TSC 065 short lesson, about 20 seconds

How Bleeding Stops

Captions available

The idea

Hemostasis, the body's way of sealing a damaged vessel, happens in three steps: vascular spasm, a platelet plug and coagulation.

In practice

The vessel's muscle contracts, platelets clump and stick at the injury, and then a clot forms from a mesh of a protein called fibrin.

Where people slip

This works well for small vessels, but a larger vessel usually needs surgical control.
