Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 5 TSC 102 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
The Rights of Medication Handling
The idea
Nurses follow the rights of medication administration to prevent errors, and the scrub person's handling of medications rests on the same checks.
In practice
The textbook lists eight rights. Walk them in order. First, the right patient. Second, the right medication. Third, the right dose or concentration, read from the container rather than assumed. Fourth, the right route. Fifth, the right time. Sixth, the right documentation, completed by the circulating nurse. Seventh, the right reason. Eighth, the right patient response, watched after the medication is given. At the sterile field, the checks that fall to the scrub person are mainly the medication, its strength as printed on the container, and an accurate label, so that the surgeon receives exactly what was intended.
Where people slip
The scrub person does not prescribe, choose a dose or decide whether a drug is given. Those decisions belong to the surgeon and the anesthesia provider; the scrub person's part is to make sure what is passed is exactly what was ordered and labelled.
