The idea
Every drug has three names: a chemical name, a generic name and a brand name.
In practice
The generic name is the standard, universal name; the brand name, also called the trade name, is chosen by the company that markets the drug.
Where people slip
One generic drug can carry several brand names, so preference cards and labels should use the generic name.
