Captions available

The idea

The body has two main cavities: a posterior, or dorsal, cavity and an anterior, or ventral, cavity.

In practice

The dorsal cavity holds the brain and spinal cord; the ventral cavity holds the thoracic cavity above the diaphragm and the abdominopelvic cavity below it.

Where people slip

The heart lies in the mediastinum, the central part of the thoracic cavity, between the lungs.
