The Kidneys
Captions available
The idea
The kidneys are a pair of organs that lie behind the peritoneum, on the posterior wall of the abdomen.
In practice
They are richly supplied with blood, receiving about a quarter of the heart's output at rest; each drains urine into a ureter.
Where people slip
Their position behind the peritoneum is why some kidney operations use a side-lying position rather than a front approach.
