The Stomach

Captions available

The idea

The stomach has four main regions: the cardia, the fundus, the body and the pylorus.

In practice

The cardia is where the esophagus enters; the pylorus ends at the pyloric sphincter, which opens into the small intestine.

Where people slip

The stomach is held in place by folds of peritoneum, the lesser and greater omentum, which carry vessels the surgeon must respect.
