Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 20 TSC 487 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Needle Points
The idea
The point style of a needle decides how it passes through tissue, and it is chosen to match the tissue.
In practice
Learn the main styles in order. First, a taper point needle is round and comes to a simple point; it spreads tissue rather than cutting it, leaving a small tract, and it suits softer tissue such as intestine and vessels. Second, a conventional cutting needle is triangular, with its third cutting edge on the inside of the curve; it suits tough tissue such as skin. Third, a reverse cutting needle has its third edge on the outside of the curve, also for tough tissue. Fourth, a tapercut needle combines a short cutting tip with a taper body, penetrating easily while leaving a small tract. Fifth, spatula needles are flat and used mainly in eye surgery.
Where people slip
A cutting needle in delicate tissue can tear it, and a taper needle in tough skin can bend. The point style is printed on the package; check it matches the request.
