Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 20 TSC 490 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Reading a Suture Package
The idea
A suture package carries the information needed to confirm it is the right suture before it is opened.
In practice
Read the package in order. First, the material and whether it is absorbable. Second, the size, including the number of zeros. Third, whether it is monofilament or braided, and its color if relevant. Fourth, the needle: its point style and its curve. Fifth, the number of needles, which is verified when the package is opened, because needles are counted by the number marked. Sixth, the expiration date and the condition of the package, which must be intact and dry.
Where people slip
Opening the wrong suture wastes it, and a wrong size or needle at closure delays the case. Read the package fully, compare it with the request, and say it aloud as you pass it if your surgeon prefers.
