Swaged Needles
Captions available
The idea
Most surgical needles are swaged, meaning the suture is permanently attached to the needle during manufacture.
In practice
A swaged needle pulls a single strand through the tissue, leaving a smaller tract than an older eyed needle that pulled a doubled strand.
Where people slip
A swage is the weakest point of the needle-suture joint, so it is not gripped or bent.
