Thumb Forceps

Captions available

The idea

Thumb forceps, also called tissue forceps or pick-ups, are non-locking instruments for grasping tissue or objects.

In practice

Learn the common types by what they hold. First, DeBakey forceps are non-toothed and atraumatic, used to grasp tissue, including bowel, without damage. Second, Adson forceps are small with fine tips; the toothed version holds skin edges, for example to align them for skin closure. Third, heavy toothed forceps, such as Bonney forceps, hold thick, tough tissue like fascia. Fourth, Russian forceps have rounded, serrated tips for gripping dense tissue. Fifth, non-toothed dressing forceps handle dressings and gauze packing, which teeth would snag.

Where people slip

The choice between teeth and no teeth depends on the tissue. Toothed forceps on bowel can puncture it, which is why atraumatic forceps are kept ready whenever bowel is handled.
