Locking and Non-Locking Instruments
Captions available
The idea
Instruments that grasp come in two kinds: locking instruments with a ratchet, and non-locking instruments without one.
In practice
Clamps are locking, ratcheted instruments used to hold tissue or vessels; thumb forceps, often called pick-ups, are non-locking and are held closed by the hand.
Where people slip
A clamp left on tissue stays closed by itself, so every clamp on the field is tracked.
