Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 12   TSC 279 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Serrations, Teeth and Jaws

Captions available

The idea

The working surface of a grasping instrument decides how it treats tissue: serrated, toothed or smooth.

In practice

Serrations add friction without piercing; teeth give a firm hold on tough tissue but can damage delicate tissue; instruments are described as traumatic or atraumatic accordingly.

Where people slip

Teeth and serrations are different features; reaching for the wrong one can tear tissue.
