Toothed or Smooth
Captions available
The idea
Toothed forceps give a firm hold on tough tissue; smooth forceps handle delicate tissue without puncturing it.
In practice
Toothed forceps are used on skin and fascia; atraumatic, non-toothed forceps are used on bowel and other delicate structures.
Where people slip
Toothed forceps are never used to hold a suture needle, because the needle damages the teeth.
