The Bloodborne Pathogens Rule
The idea
A federal workplace rule, the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, protects workers who can reasonably expect contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.
In practice
Learn its main requirements in order. First, bloodborne pathogens are disease-causing microbes in human blood, such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. Second, other potentially infectious materials include body fluids such as cerebrospinal, pleural, peritoneal and amniotic fluid, and any fluid visibly contaminated with blood. Third, the employer must have a written exposure control plan. Fourth, engineering and work practice controls are the primary protection, backed by personal protective equipment. Fifth, hepatitis B vaccination is offered to exposed workers. Sixth, workers are trained when first assigned and at least once a year after that. Seventh, after an exposure, a confidential medical evaluation and follow-up are made available at once.
Where people slip
The rule protects you, but only if you use what it provides. Eating, drinking, applying cosmetics or lip balm, and handling contact lenses are prohibited where exposure is likely.
